Freeze-drying: removal of water from a frozen solution under vacuum to yield a dry solid.
Lyophilisation freezes a solution and then removes the water by sublimation under reduced pressure. The resulting dry solid is more chemically stable during storage and transport than a solution, which is why many peptides used in research are supplied in freeze-dried form.
