Evidence levels reflect the state of documented research only. They are not rankings of popularity, quality or suitability, and a higher level never implies that a compound is an approved medicine.
Basic biology
A biological mechanism or molecular interaction is described. No claim about human outcomes.
Preclinical research
Laboratory or animal research exists. Findings do not transfer reliably to people.
Early human research
Small or early-stage human studies exist, with limited certainty and reproducibility.
Clinical evidence
Controlled clinical research supports specific, narrowly defined conclusions.
Regulatory status
At least one competent authority has authorised a defined medicinal use in some jurisdiction.
Qualifiers
When evidence falls short.
Limited evidence
Some data exist, but design, scale or reproducibility constrain interpretation.
Insufficient evidence
Available material cannot support a conclusion in either direction.
Unsupported claim
A statement circulates publicly without evidence that meets scientific standards.

Peer-reviewed primary literature outweighs secondary summaries and commercial material.
Study design
Controls, randomisation and blinding determine how much a result can carry.
Sample size

An isolated finding remains provisional until independently repeated.
Human data
Cell and animal models justify further study; they do not establish human effect.
Biological plausibility
A proposed mechanism must be consistent with established biology.
Limitations
We state what a study could not measure as explicitly as what it did.
Conflicts of interest
Funding and commercial interest are part of interpreting any result.
Regulatory status
Authorisation is a legal determination, distinct from evidence strength.
